Alabama DHR Fails LeBrawn Rankin

Justice For Starved, Neglected, Disabled Alabama Boy

Jeremy Knowles of Morris Haynes, along with Attorney Tommy James, received media attention recently on one of the cases they are handling due to the egregiousness of the wrong that was done.

Details of the Case

1) Lebrawn Rankin was an eight-year-old boy with cerebral palsy who passed away in 2018 due to severe neglect from his mother. He weighed just 23 lbs at the time of his death.

2) Lebrawn's mother, Zedria Rankin, was indicted in August 2021 on manslaughter and aggravated child abuse charges.

3) The tragedy is largely viewed as a failure on the part of the Alabama Department of Human Resources for not responding to numerous reports from Lebrawn's school about the neglect.

4) Holding DHR accountable in civil court can help reports of child abuse/neglect to be taken more seriously in the future.
