There’s an unexpected risk that comes with reopening America’s economy after the COVID-19 pandemic—Legionnaires’ disease. If a building has been closed for more than 21-30 days, the water inside will have been stagnant when it’s time to open up again. While there was some form of disinfectant in that water initially, when stagnant for that long, it goes away. This can lead to dangerous bacteria in the water system—any water system. While Legionnaires can’t be transmitted from person to person, according to the CDC the death rate is about 1 in 10. Another unexpected problem? It has similar symptoms to COVID-19.
